Richard Hawley

With melodic, baritone anguish that falls somewhere in the neighborhood of Scott Walker, Pulp touring guitarist and former Longpigs member Richard Hawley began his solo career with his self-titled debut in 2001. Hawley was raised in Sheffield, England, as the son of a steelworker, and grew up listening to folks such as Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley. He learned guitar at an early age from his father and uncle. During the ’90s he built up a reputation as an ace guitarist and, besides his stints in Pulp and Longpigs, did session work for U.K. artists such as Robbie Williams, Beth Orton, and All Saints. He released his self-titled debut in April 2001. Hawley‘s sophomore effort, Late Night Final, which cloaked his sweet baritone and heartworn songs in lush arrangements, followed in 2002 on Bar-None Records. Hawley toured behind the album, opening for the likes of Coldplay and Pulp. Also in 2002, Hawley and Pulp leader Jarvis Cocker recorded a track for the tribute album Total Lee! The Songs of Lee Hazlewood. The next year, Hawley returned with the personal Lowedges, which was named for a place just outside his native Sheffield. In September 2005, Hawley released his first album for Mute, the bittersweet Coles Corner. He followed it in 2007 with Lady’s Bridge. HawleyDaniel Miller, who asked him if he had an album in him he’d always wanted to make regardless of commercial concerns. Hawley responded in the affirmative and underscored his remark with: “There won’t be any singles on it.” Miller told him to go ahead and record it anyway. That album, Truelove’s Gutter, was released by the label in 2009. ~ Erik Hage, All Music Guide was approached by Mute label boss

The Parish Music Box

“The wonderfully mellifluous group who spread contentment with such all-pervading curative powers..? Well, they would be The Parish Music Box. Falling somewhere between Richard Hawley and Cousteau they are part country and part lounge croon, and there is something incredibly soothing and honeyed about their sound that I found myself really liking despite my sulky mood.” – www.songbytoad.com

“lush alt. country” – The Times

“A sonic marvel” – Radio 2

John Reilly

“Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If you don’t live it, it won’t come out”.

Back in the early nineties, John Reilly was part of local band Ministers Of Inspiration. During the day he was busy training and riding dolphins at the Tibshull Aquatic Centre. He joined forces with bass player Andy Needham, added the guitar skills of Pete Hiley, and drummer Darren Ford and Boy On A Dolphin was born.

Adopting the above philosophy, their music began to touch those that came into contact with it. It is a blend of melodically and wonderfully crafted song writing that melts into thought provoking lyrics. All this is topped with a rich musicianship. There is a warmth, an uplifting sense of belonging, and an intimacy to their songs that somehow makes you feel you know the band personally, and they you.

The songs can be moving and intensely personal, quickly identifying whatever mood they find you in. With Barkers Pool To Thunder Bay (Art Music) all those elements combine to produce an album of sheer quality. It was that quality that attracted Sam Feldman, the co-manager of Bryan Adams, to the band. He heard a Boy On A Dolphin demo whilst driving his car and had to pull off to the side of the road.

Performing at Sheffield’s modest venue The Pheasant one moment and the next they were flown to Canada where they signed to Atlantic. Their debut album Words Inside was mixed in Bryan Adams’ house. Rave reviews duly followed as they toured the States and Canada. Suddenly their music was being heard on television series Due South, Dawson Creek, and on films. Their song “Fire” was the most widely played non-Canadian song on the country’s radio.

Back in the UK John interlaced his success with Dolphin by forming and lending his voice to the hugely popular band Acoustic Angels, who very rarely played to an audience that wasn’t sold out in advance. After three studio albums with Boy On A Dolphin, John is now focussing on a solo project. He is currently recording an exciting new album and performing stripped down acoustic concerts with Canadian pianist, songwriter Lewis Nitikman. John has also just finished writing all the songs for the new musical ‘Personal Demons.’ with musician/producer Steve Beighton. Keep your eye out for new shows appearing very soon.

Ryan Taylor

http://www.ry2kmusic.com/bio.htm

Ryan Taylor was brought into the world September 27th 1982 and soon immersed in a varied musical environment. Influenced from an early age by the likes of Prince, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Bobby Womack…and also John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham…not to mention Massive Attack, Radiohead, Groove Armada, Roni Size, Jamiroquai….

…this vast list is reflected in Ryan’s eclectic style of performance and production. Getting into keyboards at an early age laid the foundations for Ryan’s outstanding ability to hear, recall and re-invent harmony and melody – from a simple television theme tune to a jazz masterpiece.

After studying music production for some years, he has gone on to play in-session and as a long-term band member to numerous well-known (and some not so well-known!) bands.

Over the past years, Ryan has worked with Ali Heath Cook, Lazy Dollies, The Dizzy Club, 1600e, The Sharp Cuts, Baddkebabco, Cohen and the Shatners Bassoon Band, Upfront, The Mike Hunt Quartet, Blue Banana and the Raging Horns to name but a few.

Ryan provided keys and backing vocals for 2001′s ‘To Life’s Dreamers’ by the Lazy Dollies and was a member of the band during this time, playing many a gig to promote this wonderful album crafted by Julian Jones. 2003 saw Ryan’s EP release ‘Soulsister’, featuring tracks composed, performed and produced entirely by himself.

In 2005, Baddkebabco released ‘Under Wraps’ – a funk and blues filled album featuring Ry on vocals and keys. Baddkebabco played regular gigs on the pub circuit and were well received by a full house at the Sheffield City Hall when they supported boy on a Dolphin.

Ryan has played extensively throughout the UK at all the usual venues including The Cavern in Liverpool, The Leadmill, Plug, Memorial Hall, City Hall, The Boardwalk in Sheffield, The Garage in London, Magna in Rotherham to name but a few.

He has also played just about every top hotel in the UK with the party band The Sharp Cuts. Ry has toured around Europe with the Sharpies playing black tie balls, massive nightclubs, biker festivals, apres-ski parties….all under the influence of Schnapps.

After 3 years playing with The Sharp Cuts, Ryan took the best elements (as well as learning ‘how not to do things!’) and put together the funk/jazz/fusion outfit – Mr Proper back in August 2007.

What’s to come in 2009 and beyond…?

Ryan is currently producing the tracks to his first solo album, which will be heard live sometime in the near future…tracks can be heard first here! It’s likely that you’ll see Ry doing the odd gig for Cohen and the Shatners Bassoon Band, and definitely if you have Mr Proper playing your wedding/works do!

Ryan is also involved in the upcoming “Dark Side Of The Lounge” project. This really has to be seen to be believed so go take a look.

The funky journey starts here!
